Rupert Jenkins was elected to be the new board president of CPAC last week. Outgoing president Hamidah Glasgow has agreed to stay on the board and help the organization as it continues to develop programs and plans for a new gallery space in Denver. More on that to follow later in the spring.

Jenkins is an independent curator and editor living in Denver, CO. He works in a variety of capacities at the University of Denver’s Victoria H. Myhren Gallery and also serves on the Exhibition Committee of RedLine Denver. Jenkins is the former director of the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery (1995-2005) and former Associate Director of SF Camerawork (1989-1995). While in those positions he curated, juried, and organized numerous exhibitions of photography in the Bay Area. In February 2009 he curated two photography shows, “Hal Gould: A Retrospective” and “Places Like Us,” for RedLine Denver. Most recently he was principle organizer of “The Family Stage: Photographs by Janet Delaney, Todd Hido, and Cecil McDonald” for DU’s Myhren Gallery.

Former CPAC board member and long time friend of the organization, John Bonath, is opening a retrospective exhibition at Camera Obscura in Denver on March 5.

Announcing our latest exhibition. Closing reception to take place Friday, February 5 in Fort Collins. Details below. We hope you can join us!

From the City: Works from the Collection of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center

December 4, 2009 – February 20, 2010

Closing reception: Friday, February 5, 5.00 – 9.00 pm

At The Center for Fine Art Photography, Inc.

(in the Poudre River Arts Center)

400 North College Avenue , Fort Collins, CO   80524

Artists: Berenice Abbott, Andre Kertesz, Edward R. Miller (above), Ralph Morgan, Winter Prather, Horst Schafer, R. Ewing Stiffler, Pavel Stecha, Max Yavno

From the City is a selection of works from the 600-print collection of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. The group of nine artists includes several internationally renowned photographers. Berenice Abbot’s image of a NYC Milk Wagon and Horse, 1936, is from her Changing New York series made between 1935 and 1938. Max Yavno’s Powell Street, (1947), depicts a streetcar turnaround at the foot of one of San Francisco’s steepest and most crowded streets. Completing this selection of masterworks is Andre Kertecz’s Meudon, 1928, one of the most celebrated urban landscape photographs ever made.

A group of three images by the early-20th century photographer R. Ewing Stiffler (1888-1966) is also noteworthy. CPAC’s 2006 exhibition of works by this classic pictorialist was described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” by Westword critic Michael Paglia. Post-WWII documentary photographs from Japan and Iran by Edward R. Miller, and a series of abstractions by Winter Prather (1926-2005), who was a student of master-photographer Minor White, further display the range and depth of the CPAC collection.

Collectively the artists in From the City present a remarkable 20th century survey of people and places. And in this age of digital imagery, we are delighted to be able to write that all works in the show are vintage gelatin silver prints made from the original negatives.

The Family Stage: Photographs by Janet Delaney, Todd Hido, and Cecil McDonald Jr. runs through November 15. Gallery hours are 12-4 seven days a week, excluding university holidays.

“The Family Stage” immerses the viewer in the complexities of family dynamics, the simplicities of humdrum objects, and the sometimes turbulent, often sublime, rhythms of home. In addition to the featured works, a survey of “snapshot” albums shows how the presentation and preservation of family photographs has evolved over the centuries.

PRESS RELEASE

“Nothing More Than Something Beautiful”
Photographs by John Davenport
At Edge Gallery

Show Dates: Aug. 14, 2009 - Sept. 9, 2009

Opening Reception: Friday Aug. 14, 2009 7PM -10 PM

In this exhibition John Davenport continues to explore the depths of traditional analog photography. Shooting large format film and printing in Silver, John is able to find a beauty he has not seen come from the modern digital practice.
John has also reached back into his repertoire of vintage printing methods to express a body of work of intimate figure studies. Although John’s technique is steeped in the late 19th century, his subject matter is as a topical as AM radio and strongly influenced by Art History.
