From the City is a selection of works from the 600-print collection of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center. The group of nine artists includes several internationally renowned photographers. Berenice Abbot’s image of a NYC Milk Wagon and Horse, 1936, is from her Changing New York series made between 1935 and 1938. Max Yavno’s Powell Street, (1947), depicts a streetcar turnaround at the foot of one of San Francisco’s steepest and most crowded streets. Completing this selection of masterworks is Andre Kertecz’s Meudon, 1928, one of the most celebrated urban landscape photographs ever made.

A group of three images by the early-20th century photographer R. Ewing Stiffler (1888-1966) is also noteworthy. CPAC’s 2006 exhibition of works by this classic pictorialist was described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” by Westword critic Michael Paglia. Post-WWII documentary photographs from Japan and Iran by Edward R. Miller, and a series of abstractions by Winter Prather (1926-2005), who was a student of master-photographer Minor White, further display the range and depth of the CPAC collection.

Collectively the artists in From the City present a remarkable 20th century survey of people and places. And in this age of digital imagery, we are delighted to be able to write that all works in the show are vintage gelatin silver prints made from the original negatives.

R. Willard Dean, Charter Member of CPAC, past Treasurer and Board Member, passed away on Saturday, November 14. He was 91 years of age. Willard had been fighting ongoing illness’ for sometime.

Willard signed on as a Charter Member of CPAC at the organization’s Inaugural Dinner held at the Brown Palace on November 9, 1963 - just 6 months after the founding and incorporation of the organization. Charter Members paid a one time membership of $125.00 and received a lifetime membership in return.

Willard, a fine photographer in his own wright, was joined by his wife Marion who became an early member-volunteer for CPAC. Together they were constant participants in CPAC events including work on constructing a gallery space at the Boulder Street location in 1998.

Despite his on-going illness and growing weaker, they continued to attend every CPAC exhibit opening and Marion worked in her long time role helping with annual pot luck dinners as well as opening receptions.

For their long time involvement with CPAC, the Board, on more than one occasion, officially recognized Willard and Marion Dean for their service and dedication to the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.

Sympathy cards may be sent to:
Mrs. Marion Dean
2451 Kipling St. #208
At Edge Gallery

Show Dates: Aug. 14, 2009 - Sept. 9, 2009

Opening Reception: Friday Aug. 14, 2009 7PM -10 PM

In this exhibition John Davenport continues to explore the depths of traditional analog photography. Shooting large format film and printing in Silver, John is able to find a beauty he has not seen come from the modern digital practice.
John has also reached back into his repertoire of vintage printing methods to express a body of work of intimate figure studies. Although John’s technique is steeped in the late 19th century, his subject matter is as a topical as AM radio and strongly influenced by Art History.

For more information contact: John Davenport 720-939-4107

Gallery Hours: Fridays 7 PM to 10 PM Saturdays & Sundays 1PM to 5 PM
